Welcome to MCC Instrumental Music
The Instrumental Music program includes a full program of classes and ensembles for the Music Major and for the public at large who wish to participate in community ensembles. With over 30 of the finest faculty and staff and hundreds of passionate
students and community members involved, MCC is the place to learn and perform at your best.
Scholarships are available for music and non-music majors along with community members.

Rob Hunter is the Director of Instrumental Music at Mesa Community College. He directs the college concert bands, jazz camp and high school honor bands; works as a clinician at educational conferences, festivals and for school and university music programs and is the Music Education Coordinator with MCC and Ottawa University. Rob also works as an adjudicator and clinician for Music Festivals and Cruise Festivals International and is on staff with the Macy’s Great American Marching Band leading the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
For 9 years Dr. Hunter was the Director of the Phoenix Symphony Guild Symphonic Winds. In past years he has taught jazz band, jazz fundamentals, and jazz improvisation at Arizona State University. He served as the Past-President for the International Association for Jazz Education – Arizona Unit: the Vice President for the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association. He was also the Director of Bands and Fine Arts Department Chair at Paradise Valley High School from 1995 to 2001. From 1995-2003, Rob was a manager and conductor for numerous European tours with the Ontario Youth Bands, Canadian Ambassadors and his school music programs.
Rob’s career spans classical, jazz and commercial music. As a trumpet performer he has shared the stage or opened for groups such as: Tears For Fears, The Fixx, Maroon 5, Phoenix Symphony, Boston Symphony, the Empire Brass, Atlantic Brass and the Canadian Brass. Dr. Hunter completed his Doctor of Musical Arts at Arizona State University. He has also earned a Master of Music degree from ASU, a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education from the University of Western Ontario, Canada.

Paul Brewer, a native of Phoenix, began his college education at Mesa Community College, then transferred to Northern Arizona University, were he earned his Bachelor of Music Education. During his undergraduate, Mr. Brewer was the director of “The Show 2000” which was a big hit in Flagstaff. This nominated him for the most prestigious award on NAU campus, the “Louie” Award. Throughout his education, he has studied under Grant Wolf, Fred Forney, Joel DiBartolo, Wilde Zumwalt, Mike Crotty, Mike Kocour, Russell Schmidt, and Patricia Hoy. Mr. Brewer has had the opportunity to perform with such great musicians as Peter Erskine, Ed Shaughnessy, Wayne Bergeron, Al Martino, Wallace Roney, and John Abercrombie. Mr. Brewer has been the band director at Barry Goldwater and Paradise Valley High Schools. He has recently earned his Master’s degree in Music Education with emphasis in Jazz Studies from Arizona State University. While earning his Master’s degree, he was the Graduate Assistant for the Jazz Studies Department. Paul Brewer is currently a freelance saxophonist, Artist in Residence at a few local schools, adjudicator of Marching, Concert and Jazz band festivals, President of the Arizona Association for Jazz Education, in addition to music faculty at Mesa and Scottsdale Community Colleges, and Marcos de Niza High School.
